Stroke Clinical Trials in the UK

Find clinical trials for stroke in the United Kingdom. Explore treatment pathways including emergency interventions, rehabilitation, and prevention.

Understanding Stroke

Stroke affects ~100,000 people per year in the UK - one every 5 minutes. It occurs when blood supply to part of the brain is cut off (ischaemic, ~85%) or when a blood vessel bursts (haemorrhagic, ~15%). Stroke is a medical emergency - "time is brain." The FAST acronym (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) helps recognise stroke. There are 1.3 million stroke survivors in the UK, many living with disabilities.

Emergency Treatment

Ischaemic stroke: thrombolysis (alteplase or tenecteplase) within 4.5 hours, or mechanical thrombectomy (physically removing the clot) up to 24 hours for large vessel occlusions. Haemorrhagic stroke: blood pressure control, surgery to evacuate blood or clip aneurysms. The NHS has 24/7 thrombolysis centres and an expanding thrombectomy service. Post-stroke care in a dedicated stroke unit significantly improves outcomes.

Rehabilitation and Recovery

Stroke rehabilitation includes physiotherapy (mobility and strength), occupational therapy (daily activities), speech and language therapy, and psychological support. Early, intensive rehabilitation improves recovery. Newer approaches: robotic-assisted therapy, brain stimulation, virtual reality rehabilitation, and constraint-induced movement therapy.

Clinical Trial Opportunities

Active UK stroke trials include: extended time window thrombolysis, novel neuroprotective agents, stem cell therapy for chronic stroke recovery, brain-computer interfaces for rehabilitation, intensive blood pressure management post-stroke, and secondary prevention strategies (anticoagulation for atrial fibrillation, carotid stenting vs endarterectomy). The Stroke Association funds major UK research programmes.
